The inflation model explains this because the sudden massive inflation early in the universe's history forces the universe to have a flat geometry. That implies that the universe's density is exactly equal to the critical density, which implies that the universe must be a combination of mainly dark energy, and some dark matter, since the visible matter is not nearly enough for critical density.
