The liquid drop model of the nucleus allowed von Weizscker to propose his equation for a semi-empirical mass formula. This formula includes all of the following EXCEPT:
  a. A correction for nuclear surface interactions being different than interior saturated interactions.
b.A term providing for the repulsion of protons in the nucleus.
c.A term proportional to the total number of nucleons.
d.A term for the energy associated with the fact that most stable nuclei prefer to have N approximately equal to Z.
e.A term incorporating the instability of protons within the nucleus.

Question 2

When a diode is operating in the reverse-bias mode,

a. the current flow is generally much larger than in forward bias.
  b. the positive terminal of the power supply is connected to the p-side of the diode.
  c. the recombination current is larger than the thermal electron current.
  d. current varies significantly as a function of the applied voltage.
  e. current is typically only a small fraction of the current when the same voltage is applied in forward bias.

Answer to Question 1

e.
This statement is not true. Protons are not unstable as free particles (as neutrons are) or within the nucleus. The nucleus as a whole, however, might be unstable if the number of neutrons and protons are disparate, which is what the model corrects for with one of the terms.

Answer to Question 2

e.
The reverse-bias current is very small, while the forward bias current grows rapidly with increasing voltage.
