Phase velocity is
  A. the maximum transverse velocity of a point on a wave, when the particle is moving fastest in each period of oscillation.
  B. the velocity of a point on the wave at a given phase.
  C. always half the group velocity in a wave packet.
  D. always greater than the particle's velocity when the particle is described in terms of de Broglie matter waves.
  E. unrelated to the energy of the wave

Question 2

Which of the following statements is not true about wave packets and their use in describing particles?

A. A wave packet is fundamentally a region over which a number of waves of different frequencies and amplitudes are added together to form a non-zero result.
  B. An important property of a wave packet describing a particle is the superposition of many different waves.

C. The particle can be described using Fourier series and a Fourier integral.
  D. The movement and travel of a wave packet is governed by their grouping order.
  E. An important property of a wave packet describing a particle is the localization of wave amplitude.

Answer to Question 1

B.
The phase velocity is the velocity of a point on the wave at constant phase (a crest, for instance). The phase velocity is to the wave packet as the velocity of the center of mass is to a particle.

Answer to Question 2

D.
This statement is not true. The movement of a wave packet is at the group velocity, not grouping order.

It is widely believed that giving a daily oral dose of aspirin to heart attack patients improves their chances of survival because the aspirin blocks the formation of new blood clots.
