Is the acceleration due to gravity always pointing vertically downward even for an object whose velocity is vertically upward? Explain your answer.

The values of t are squared, whereas in calculating g the values of d are not.

Yes. The force of gravity is always acting vertically downward, and the acceleration
is always in the direction of the unbalanced force.
