 Serve a therapeutic purpose
 Be short
 Fit in smoothly with the thoughts being expressed by the client
 Focus on the client, not the counselor
 Provide immediate reactions to the client material, not charged personal information like a history of sexual abuse
 Reflect caring and acceptance of the client
