 Feelings toward therapist, and
 Actions toward the therapist.
 Builds the clients confidence in the analytic process and in interpretations by sharing and refining interpretations.
 Sometimes confronts the client with unconscious material.

Splitting occurs when a mature view of positive and negative qualities does not develop, and the individual views self and others as all good or all bad, often in alternating cycles.
