general problem solving
(2) Task specific strategies are specific to certain academic or social learning tasks

Briefly describe the theoretical orientation of each family of instruction.
(1) Social family: based on social constructivism; knowledge is constructed on continuously
reconstructed; cognitive and affective domains are linked; reflection on problems of the physical and
social world is critical to construction of knowledge; understanding the perspectives of others is
important to our own understanding of the world; connected to democratic principles of learning
(2) Behavioral family: learning is lawful and responsive to structure, modeling, and feedback;
reinforcement, modeling, and antecedents shape student learning and behavior
(3) Information processing family: based on the metaphor of the brain as computer; information moves
through several processes (attention, perception, working and long term memory, executive control);
information and skills can be thought of as declaritive, procedural, or conditional
