Students should cite:

 Biological risk (events before, during, or after birth that increase the likelihood of developmental problems). Examples: birth-defect-related teratogens; alcohol or drugs used by the mother; maternal diseases such as rubella, sexually transmitted diseases, and AIDS.
 Environmental risk (dangers in the environment in which a child develops). Examples: poverty, abusive people, caregivers who smoke.
