Contact with the West was limited to some traders from Holland until 1853, when Commodore Perry negotiated a trade deal with the United States; this ended the isolation. Japan sought to expand in the 20th century, and took military action against China and Manchuria to achieve this goal. Subsequently, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, which ended with Japan's defeat in World War II. Substantial rebuilding has made Japan an economic power.
