Scandinavia is located in the north, with parts extending north of the Arctic Circle. Scandinavia experiences long hours of daylight in summer and long hours of dark in the winter. Celebrations were tied to these major changes in light. Furthermore, the mountainous regions left very little fertile farming land, resulting in people living near the coast line.
