Answer to Question 1

The climate in the Roman Empire was well suited to growing citrus and olive trees. Fruits and vegetables were plentiful, and food was a ritualistic part of the culture and entertaining. Their cuisine featured heavy spices, thick sauces and wine. The climate of Mongolia and central Asia was harsh and did not support farming, so the diet was meat-based from hunting and domesticated animals. Some grains were available but fruits and vegetable were rare.
Food was a means of survival rather than entertainment.
