Answer to Question 1

When the ingested material reaches the end of the ileum, it is in a liquid form. Water and electrolytes are absorbed by the colon. Without a colon, this will be lost through the ileostomy. Liquids an hour before or after a meal may be helpful. Avoiding excessive liquids, coarse foods as corn, peanuts, etc., may also be helpful. Gas-forming foods should be eaten as tolerated.

Answer to Question 2

Decreases inflammation, mainly by stabilizing leukocyte lysosomal membranes. Also suppresses the immune response and stimulates bone marrow. It could cause peptic ulcer, GI irritation, and increased appetite. Possible hypokalemia, hyperglycemia, and carbohydrate intolerance, and growth suppression in children. Protein catabolism is also a side effect.
