Answer to Question 1

Alcohol stimulates HCl secretion in the stomach. Alcohol itself is an irritant to the gastric mucosa. Alcoholics frequently suffer from malnutrition which could affect the integrity of the mucosa. Considering all of these factors, there is probable cause for alcoholics to have ulcers.

Answer to Question 2

The statins work well but they work best with a low-cholesterol diet and an exercise program. Like any drug, they are not equally effective with everyone. The benefits of a healthy diet and exercise program do more than help lower cholesterol and should be practiced by everyone, whether they have elevated cholesterol or not.
