Answer to Question 1

A percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy. This involves inserting a feeding tube surgically into the stomach but is a minor surgical procedure and could possibly be done at the bedside.

Answer to Question 2

1500 - 1800 kcals with exercise would work, but if he is highly motivated, 1200 kcals would be better. Some RDs would not consider anything other than a 1200 kcal diet. It depends on your philosophy of weight reduction and how you have taught your students.
