Answer to Question 1

Bolus feedings are cheaper to administer because there is no pump to rent or buy and no bag sets are needed. The pump disadvantages include: requires time to monitor, needs to be unclogged occasionally, feeding bag needs changing, etc. Advantages are most pumps have alarms that go off when pump is clogged or if back flow is occurring. This could help prevent aspiration.

Bolus feedings advantages: also require time to administer but less time in monitoring than pumps, less expensive to administer, and the patient can travel without needing a pump. Disadvantages: aspiration could still occur and may not be detected as quickly due to less monitoring and lack of alarm system.

Answer to Question 2

BEE = 66 + 13.7 x wt + 5 x ht - 6.8 x age
= 66 + 13.7 x 87.2 + 5 x 182.9 - 6.8 x 54 = 66 + 1194.6 + 914.5 - 367.2
= 1808 or 1800

1800 x activity level of 1.3 to 1.4 = 2340 to 2520 kcals.
