Answer to Question 1

The CHO is reduced from the normal amount of CHO allowed the nonpregnant female in an attempt to prevent an extreme rise in blood glucose postprandial. Keep in mind that the amount and kind of carbohydrate that should be allowed during pregnancy is controversial. The regimen used here is one theory. Protein is higher than usual for the nonpregnant state to blunt the effects of giving high CHO instead. The protein will still provide a source of calories without raising blood glucose. Considering Mrs. C is overweight, a low-fat diet would be appropriate. However, the normal amount of fat, rather than a reduced fat diet, is allowed for the same reason as the elevated protein, to blunt the effects of a high-CHO diet while still providing calories.

Mrs. C's interview indicated an excess of CHO, particularly as simple sugars, and her blood work indicated postprandial elevations in her blood glucose.

Answer to Question 2

For her height, she is right at the 50th percentile. For her weight, she is close to the 70th percentile.
