Answer to Question 1

According to the RDAs, you would add 300 kcals of intake per day during pregnancy. Suggested weight gain during pregnancy is 28 to 40 lbs for underweight women, 25 to 35 lbs for normal weight women, 15 to 25 lbs for overweight women, and a minimum of 13 lbs for obese women. If Mrs. C is to gain 20 lbs during pregnancy, and if her pregnancy is 40 weeks, then she is to gain 20/40 = 0.5 lbs per week. During the first part of pregnancy she should gain less than that and more than that during the latter part of pregnancy. The actual additional caloric intake per day would be difficult to estimate, but, based on the average projected weight gain, her daily additional caloric intake would be about 250 kcals per day to gain an average of 0.5 lbs per week.

Answer to Question 2

Constipation could cause additional pressure and stress on the diverticula and prevent the passage of waste material causing stagnation of material in the diverticula. This would increase the available time for bacteria to digest particles and release more organic acids causing more inflammation. The increased time in the colon could also increase the water absorbed and cause an impaction and possibly rupture a diverticulum.
