Answer to Question 1

The nervous system develops from the neural tube (a type of embryonic tissue) in the first few weeks of pregnancy. During this time of pregnancy the female would not be able to tell she is pregnant. Folate is necessary for the proper development of the neural tube. Recent research indicates that if folate supplements are taken one month prior to conception and continued throughout the first trimester of pregnancy, neural tube defects could be prevented.
