How much food will Mr. Y be able to eat at one sitting after surgery? What are the possible complications if he eats more than the recommended amount?

Answer to Question 1

There are several different types of gastroplasty being performed today and the amount of total kcals consumed in a day and the amount of food eaten at one sitting may very. Determine the type of surgery being performed in your area and the diet they recommend and go from there. Usually the day's allotment of calories is 1000 or less. This amount of kcals is spread out over several small feedings with noncaloric foods mixed in, such as diet Jell-o, puddings, drinks, etc. The pouch that is created by the surgical technique is usually about 2 ounces. When the pouch is full, the patient has to stop eating or drinking or he could cause himself to vomit and rupture the staples.

Answer to Question 2

Approximately 1200 kcals and 83 g of protein. Some RDs/MDs may want to use more protein. Make sure the patient receives a multivitamin/mineral supplement each day, 8 glasses of water, a source of potassium, and ample Ca, and that he avoids caffeine and alcohol.
