Answer to Question 1

218/2.2 = 99.1 kg x 0.8 g = 79.3 g of protein. It may be argued by some that more protein should be used. As with the last case study, it depends on the RD's assessment of how much muscle is present in the overweight man.

Answer to Question 2

Harris-Benedict equation for males = 66 + 13.7 x wt + 5 x ht - 6.8 x age
wt = ABW in kg = 218/2.2 = 99.1
ht = 6'1 = 73 x 2.54 = 185.4 cm
= 66 + 13.7 x 99.1 + 5 x 185.4 - 6.8 x 39
= 66 + 1357.7 + 927 - 265
= 2086

I would use an activity factor of 30, considering the size of this patient and lack of activity.
2086 x .30 = 625.8 + 2086 = 2712 kcals
