Answer to Question 1

The BMR would be decreased due to starvation (loss of protein mass) and would not return to normal after refeeding for weeks, depending on the severity and length of starvation. During starvation the GI tract would become more efficient for the absorption of many nutrients. Thus, the increased amount of kcals that are introduced with refeeding would not be needed for energy and would be converted to fat. It will take some time for muscle to be replaced and thus the BMR to return to normal. Also, water retention would take place as a result of the water losses during starvation and due to the decreased serum albumin that accompanies starvation.

Answer to Question 2

Refeeding too fast is a severe stress on the body that can overload the cardiovascular and respiratory systems as well as the digestive system. Increased heart rate, arrhythmias, heart failure, increased respiratory rate, and respiratory failure are some of the more serious complications. There may also be intestinal cramps, gas, distention, and diarrhea.
