Use of sugar alcohols may cause diarrhea when used in large amounts. They contain fewer kcals than other forms of carbohydrate and so are less likely to result in weight gain. They do not af-fect plasma lipid levels and do not necessarily displace more nutrient-dense foods in the diet.
