The nurse was discussing dietary supplements with a client who prefers to treat himself holistically rather than to use medications produced by pharmaceutical companies.

One reason that he claimed supplements were better was because they are all-natural products, and therefore more safe. The nurse informed him that, in regards to the safety of dietary supplements, the federal government: 1. Closely regulates manufacturing and marketing.
   2. Requires safety to be established in clinical trials.
   3. Establishes stringent criteria for content labeling.
   4. Does not conduct a pre-market review of label claims.

Answer to Question 1

4
Rationale: The federal government does not conduct a pre-market review of label claims for dietary supplements. In fact, most dietary supplements are not evaluated by the FDA prior to being offered for sale to the public. No clinical trials are required since products are not FDA approved. The FDA is responsible for regulating package label claims.

Answer to Question 2

A
Feedback:
Refeeding syndrome may occur by reintroducing carbohydrates to clients who have adapted to starvation by burning fat. This will increase insulin secretion and the thiamin and minerals involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Alcoholism is one of those conditions.
