Weakening of muscles along the gastrointestinal tract may cause constipation in older adults be-cause the muscles do not push food along as powerfully. Diarrhea would be more likely to occur if the muscles became stronger. Bloating and gas may accompany constipation, but this is a sec-ondary rather than a primary effect. Colon cancer is not associated with weakening of intestinal muscles.
