Ketones are a by-product of fat metabolism, a source of energy used by the body when glucose is not available due to insufficient amounts of insulin or starvation. Ketones are eliminated by the kidneys at a rate that is slower than they are produced and can be measured in the blood and/or urine as an indicator of fat catabolism. Ketoacidosis refers to a state in which there are metabolic alterations including altered blood pH and fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
