Rationale: Women of childbearing age are at the highest risk to develop an iron deficiency related to menses and the increased iron requirements needed during pregnancy. Iron deficiency does not affect the majority of healthy adults. Infants with a diet of breast milk or formula are provided with an adequate source of iron. Iron recommendation for males decreases from the amount needed during adolescence, decreasing from 11 mg/day to only 8 mg/day.
