Answer to Question 1

4

Rationale: The RDA has recommended and increase from the 400 mcg/day of folic acid for females of childbearing age to 600 mcg/day. Further the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend an intake of 600 mcg/day be consumed as the synthetic form, folic acid. Neural tube defects are among the most common birth defect. Folate, which is a form of folic acid, should be consumed within the first few weeks of pregnancy when the spinal column closes. The recommendation for all females of childbearing age is 600 mcg/day of folic acid to reduce the risk of neural tube defects that develop very early in pregnancy.

Answer to Question 2

B
Strength training forces bones to react to the stresses placed on them by becoming stronger. Strength training may promote weight loss, depending on the type of exercise, but this is not necessarily so. Exercise overall may decrease risk of some types of cancer and improve sleep patterns, but this is not specifically associated with strength training.
