Answer to Question 1

C
Adequate intake of folic acid is especially important for women of childbearing age because adequate folate status during the first month of pregnancy helps prevent neural tube defects (spi-na bifida). Pregnant and lactating women have higher folic acid needs than nonpregnant women, but it is important to encourage adequate folic acid intake in all women of childbearing age be-cause neural tube defects occur very early in pregnancy, before most women even realize they are pregnant. Competitive athletes, infants, and young children do not have special needs related to folic acid.

Answer to Question 2

A
Inadequate intake of folate during pregnancy is associated with spina bifida in infants. Cystic fibrosis and Down syndrome are genetic disorders. Macrocytic anemia is caused by an overt de-ficiency of folate, but is not usually found in infants in association with poor maternal intake during pregnancy.

Hippocrates noted that blood separates into four differently colored liquids when removed from the body and examined: a pure red liquid mixed with white liquid material with a yellow-colored froth at the top and a black substance that settles underneath; he named these the four humors (for blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile).

Your skin wrinkles if you stay in the bathtub a long time because the outermost layer of skin (which consists of dead keratin) swells when it absorbs water. It is tightly attached to the skin below it, so it compensates for the increased area by wrinkling. This happens to the hands and feet because they have the thickest layer of dead keratin cells.

Chronic necrotizing aspergillosis has a slowly progressive process that, unlike invasive aspergillosis, does not spread to other organ systems or the blood vessels. It most often affects middle-aged and elderly individuals, spreading to surrounding tissue in the lungs. The disease often does not respond to conventionally successful treatments, and requires individualized therapies in order to keep it from becoming life-threatening.
