Answer to Question 1

D
Positive nitrogen balance means that more nitrogen is retained in the body than is excreted. This would be the situation in pregnancy when new tissue is being formed in the mother and fetus. Aging, infection, and starvation are all times when the body would be in negative nitrogen bal-ance.

Answer to Question 2

1, 2
Rationale: Total energy expenditure is the sum of all energy requiring processes in the body as well as any physical activity. The basal metabolic rate and the thermic effect of food are included in this equation. The food source and client's appetite determines the kcalories consumed. The patient's current body weight is not considered.
