Rationale: Iron deficiency results in anemia, and can cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and tachycardia. Symptoms of potassium deficiency include cardiac arrhythmias and muscle cramps. Zinc deficiency is more likely to include symptoms of rash or hair loss. Sodium excess can cause shortness of breath due to a fluid overload but does not cause tachycardia or fatigue. Sodium deficiency is uncommon.

These people included 55 lung cancer patients, 31 breast cancer patients, and 83 cancer-free patients. The dogs detected 54 of the 55 lung cancer patients as having cancer, detected 28 of the 31 breast cancer patients, and gave only three false-positive results (detecting cancer in people who didn't have it).
