Glucose is a monosaccharide and is the form of carbohydrate that travels in the blood, often called blood sugar. Glucose is not a disaccharide. Lactose is the disaccharide often called milk sugar.

Clients may develop anemia related to impaired synthesis of erythropoietin. GI absorption of iron is also impaired. Providing necessary iron supplements via an IV will bypass the intestine and ensure absorption into the system.
