In acceptance-based therapies, the client learns to accept her negative thoughts or feelings. Once the client accepts her negative thoughts and feelings, they lose the ability to disrupt her life and she can work toward valued behavior change.

In cognitive coping skills training, the therapist teaches clients specific self-statements that they can make in a problem situation to improve their performance or influence their behavior in the situation.
