Answer to Question 1

HIV can be passed from mother to child right before or during childbirth (though cesarean delivery can sometimes reduce the risk of transmission) and also through breast milk. Though breast milk has a lower concentration of HIV as compared to blood, semen, and vaginal fluid, and therefore doesn't pose as large of a threat to adults, it is still a primary mode of transmission to infants.

Answer to Question 2

The earliest symptoms of AIDS include unexplained weight loss, constant fatigue, mild fever, swollen lymph glands, diarrhea, and sore throat. Advanced symptoms include loss of appetite, skin diseases, night sweats, and deterioration of mucous membranes.
