New research conducted on more than 81,000 women tracked during 26 years showed that adherence to a low-risk lifestyle significantly decreases the risk of SCD. The low-risk lifestyle included the following factors:
 Not smoking.
 Being physically active for at least 30 minutes a day.
 Not being overweight or obese.
Eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans, and fish; with considerably more monounsaturated than saturated fat, moderate use of alcohol, and low intake of red and processed meats.
