According to the FDA, recipients of henna tattoos have reported redness, blistering, raised red weeping lesions, loss of pigmentation, increased sun sensitivity, and permanent scarring. Dyes using so-called black henna present greater risks because many contain a coal-tar hair dye called p-phenylenediamine (PPD), which is banned by law from cosmetics intended to be applied to the skin. Reactions to this compound may be severe enough to require emergency treatment.
