Women planning to become pregnant are advised to take a daily supplement of folic acid starting one month before conception. Folic acid, or folate, a B vitamin, reduces the risk of neural tube defects in children. Another potential benefit, based on a study of more than 85,710 new mothers, may be lower risk of the most severe form of autism.
