Answer to Question 1

. Specific. When writing goals, state in a positive manner exactly what you would like to accomplish. Be sure to write down your goals. An unwritten goal is simply a wish. A written goal, in essence, becomes a contract with yourself. Show this goal to a friend or an instructor and have him or her witness the contract you made with yourself by signing alongside your signature. Once you have identified and written down a Specific goal, write the specific actions that will help you reach that goal.

. Measurable. Whenever possible, goals and actions should be measurable.

. Acceptable. Goals that you set for yourself are more motivational than goals that someone else sets for you. As you set an acceptable goal, ask yourself: Do I have the time, commitment, and necessary skills to accomplish this goal? If not, you need to restate your goal so that it is acceptable to you.

. Realistic. Goals should be within reach. Unattainable goals only set you up for failure, discouragement, and loss of interest. On the other hand, do not write goals that are too easy to achieve and that do not challenge you. If a goal is too easy, you may lose interest and stop working toward it.

. Time-specific. A goal always should have a specific date set for completion. The chosen date should be realistic but not too distant in the future. Allow yourself enough time to achieve the goal, but not too much time, as this could affect your performance. With a deadline, a task is much easier to work toward.
