Plants can adapt to limit transpiration, to access moisture, and to store water internally. Thick bark, little foliage, small waxy leaves, growing in a compact shape close to the ground, and deep or widespread but shallow root systems are among the adaptations of arid plants. Sharp thorns and bitter tastes can also keep browsing animals away.
