In most states, the following types of sales are considered illegal: the sale of alcohol to minors (under age twenty-one), the sale of alcohol to visibly intoxicated persons, and the sale of alcohol to habitual drunkards. Sales to anyone on this prohibited list may result in the suspension or revocation of a liquor license. Illegal sales can also lead to civil liability for resulting injuries and, particularly in the case of serving a minor, criminal liability for which penalties could include jail and a fine.
