Answer to Question 1

The purpose of this question is twofold. The first is to illustrate to students one type of difficult decision they may be required to make when they manage a food service operation. The second purpose is to allow students to consider where they would go to find specialized information they may need to make good operating decisions.

In this example, as in many others today, managers should seek legal advice before making some types of decisions. Sources of such legal advice may include the operation's own attorney, professional trade associations such as the National Restaurant Association (NRA) or, if the operation is part of a chain, human resource professionals employed by the chain.

Although the Roman numeral for the number 4 has always been taught to have been "IV," according to historians, the ancient Romans probably used "IIII" most of the time. This is partially backed up by the fact that early grandfather clocks displayed IIII for the number 4 instead of IV. Early clockmakers apparently thought that the IIII balanced out the VIII (used for the number 8) on the clock face and that it just looked better.
