Answer to Question 1

Chefs should be aware of the potential advantages and disadvantages of the information
conveyed via the grapevine. It may be used to test team members' reactions prior to the official
handed-down information. Obtaining feedback informally from the team can be used to gauge
acceptance or compliance with new ideas or change. It is important that the information carried
through the grapevine will not harm or frighten team members. Rumors relating to change can
cause team members to feel insecure and create fear. If based on false or damaging information,
the grapevine can be harmful to the overall foodservice organization. The degree of harm
inaccurate information causes is largely dependent upon the work climate prevailing in the
kitchen. If morale is low and poor chef supervision exists, the harmful rumors can easily find
acceptance.

Some rumors should be dispelled immediately. To do this, the source of the rumor needs to be
established. Ask the team members about the rumor and offer to share the facts. Rumors flourish
when there is limited communication. By supplying the facts and adequate information in an
open, honest, and free atmosphere, rumors can be quashed and the uncertainty upon which they
grow removed. Gossip about team members' personal dispositions should not be tolerated.
