Answer to Question 1

Studies have shown that a high proportion of people lie on some aspect of their resumes.
Therefore, background investigations are necessary. Inadequate reference checking can be a
major cause of high employee turnover. If sources in addition to former employers are used, it is
possible to obtain valuable information about the applicant's character and habits. Other points to
remember are that the information should be job-related and that written documentation outlining
that the employment decision was based upon relevant information should exist. It is generally
advisable to ask the applicant to fill out forms permitting information to be solicited from
reference sources. Even then, many organizations are reluctant to put in writing an evaluation of
former employees. One reason for this trend is that former employees who discovered that they
had been given poor recommendations have sued several firms. Individuals have a legal right to
examine letters of reference about themselves (unless they have waived the right to do so or were
protected by the Privacy Act of 1974 or by state laws).

People who have myopia, or nearsightedness, are not able to see objects at a distance but only up close. It occurs when the cornea is either curved too steeply, the eye is too long, or both. This condition is progressive and worsens with time. More than 100 million people in the United States are nearsighted, but only 20% of those are born with the condition. Diet, eye exercise, drug therapy, and corrective lenses can all help manage nearsightedness.
