A manager notices that many of the guests are not finishing their meals. When the manager discusses this with the service staff, the manager learns that significant numbers of guests are also requesting take-home boxes.

Initial authority is derived from the position. How authority is used will determine its full extent.
Authority for the sake of power is useless. It must seek to inspire desired outcomes from each
person. Requests or demands made on employees without good reason often lead to anger and
frustration on the part of both the employee and the chef supervisor. Kitchen team members will
respond more freely to a request than they will to an order.
