Answer to Question 1

Small-volume operations use decentralized purchasing. All or most purchases are made by department heads or someone in their department. Large purchases are often subject to approval of the manager. Large-volume operations may use centralized purchasing. All or most purchases are made by a purchasing agent. Communication among department staff, receiving and storing employees, the purchasing director, vendors, and accounting staff is very important. Documents such as purchasing requisitions, purchase orders, and delivery invoices must be carefully routed.

Purchasing affects every team member of the operation. Purchasers must have the technical skills to understand requirements for products and services. They must have conceptual skills to recognize the operation's needs and interpersonal skills to interact with employees and vendors. Purchasers must perform a wide range of tasks related to making quality and quantity decisions, ensuring that the best prices are received, and interacting with vendors.
