Answer to Question 1

Any (and all) of the five research methods highlighted in this Chapter Seven
would have been appropriate. Survey and focus group research could be
especially effective in testing and formulating messages.

Answer to Question 2

At first blush, yes. Although committed to the new technology, Monsanto
apparently concluded that its negative consequences outweighed its benefits.
However, the company should not be criticized for reversing its field. There is
nothing to be gained -- and plenty that can be lost -- in prolonging a losing battle.
At the same time, the company continues to sound a cautionary note that it
intends to leave all of its options open when it comes to new technology.
