 Routine activities theory: Crime is a normal function of the routine activities of modern living; offenses can be expected if there is a motivated offender and a suitable target that is not protected by capable guardians.
 Lack of capable guardians: home owners and their neighbors, friends, and relatives
 Availability of suitable targets: homes containing easily salable goods
 Presence of motivated offenders: unemployed teenagers
 If each of these components is present, there is greater likelihood that a predatory crime will take place
 Student views will vary.
