Define routine activities theory. Cohen and Felson posit that the interaction of three variables affect the volume and distribution of predatory crime. List the three variables and provide an example of each. What is your view of this theory, explain.

Answer to Question 1

 Routine activities theory: Crime is a normal function of the routine activities of modern living; offenses can be expected if there is a motivated offender and a suitable target that is not protected by capable guardians.
 Lack of capable guardians: home owners and their neighbors, friends, and relatives
 Availability of suitable targets: homes containing easily salable goods
 Presence of motivated offenders: unemployed teenagers
 If each of these components is present, there is greater likelihood that a predatory crime will take place
 Student views will vary.
