Answer to Question 1

Inmates are assessed when they enter prison to determine which treatment would be most effective. Some common classification systems used are risk assessment and needs assessment. The risk assessment is used to assign inmates to high-, medium-, and low-risk case loads. The needs assessment is used by staff to record prisoners' problems, as well as the magnitude of these problems. A common assessment used is the LSI-R.

Answer to Question 2

The role of treatment and services in prisons today is to provide opportunities for inmates to profit from confinement and to provide adequate, basic care of inmates. The goal of treatment is to correct an offender's character, habits, attitudes, or behaviors so they are less likely to engage in criminal behavior. Recent data have indicated that treatment can reduce recidivism if the offender completes the program and voluntarily enters the program. Some prisons had difficulty conducting the desired treatment they would like to provide because of overcrowded prisons and cutbacks on programming.
