Answer to Question 1

Felonies are serious crimes punishable with at least one year in a state prison or federal penitentiary. Depending on the laws of a particular state, certain felony crimes can also be punishable by death. Conviction for a felony offense results in the loss of many rights, such as the right to hold public office and the right to own a firearm. The range of felonies is vast, and as a result some states and the federal government now have different degrees, or classes, of felonies. Whereas the federal government assigns felony scores based on the severity of the offense, states tend to designate the most serious felonies as either Class A or Class 1 felonies.

Misdemeanors are relatively minor crimes subject to fines or brief confinement in a location other than prison (e.g., county jail)
