Answer to Question 2

With an expanding caseload and greater responsibility to treat and care for nontraditional clients, probation departments have or are now developing a variety of new programs to amplify the effectiveness of community corrections. Some of the ongoing programs include:
Deferred sentence:
This variation delays conviction on a guilty plea until the completion of a term of probation, at which time the offender withdraws the guilty plea. The court dismisses the charge, thereby clearing the offender's record of a conviction.
Shock probation:
This calls for the shock of a few weeks in prison for a first-time offender followed by a standard term of probation.
Split sentence:
Used by some jurisdictions, offenders spend a period of time in jail before being placed on probation in the community, or they are sentenced to a number of weekends in jail while remaining in the community on probation status during the week.
In addition, intense supervision and bench probation are used in some jurisdictions depending on availability and caseloads.
